Mia and the photographer James Balog!

A full day of films at Sundance

Our first movie on Sunday night turned out to be a great one. We saw Smashed, directed by James Ponsoldt. It's a dramatic film about a young woman's recovery from alcoholism. This movie was well done all around, with excellent acting that allowed the viewers to sympathize with the characters.
The next morning, we got up early to get good seats for Liberal Arts, which was written, directed, and featured Josh Radnor. This film was another dramatic film on a relatively lighter subject matter; however, it was more complex in that there were multiple plot lines and many literary references! This film is focused on the development and maturation of a 35-year-old named Jesse; his relationship with a 19-year-old student at his alma mater, Kenyon College, acts as a catalyst for his insights into his lack of direction in life. It featured wonderful cinematography and screenwriting, and like Smashed also featured realistic and expressive acting. Some of the other themes in the film were the tension between old and young, romanticism and post-modernism, and high-brow and low-brow.
After seeing Liberal Arts, we split into two groups; one group saw Red Lights, a mind-bending exploration of paranormal occurrences, while the other group saw The D-Word: Understanding Dyslexia. The latter film is a powerful story about people with the learning disorder called Dyslexia; it goes into the science behind this disorder and details the lives of many people who live with it. The whole cast of this film was even available for Q&A after the conclusion.
At the end of the day, we all had dinner in town, and a subset of the students went to see Chasing Ice, a documentary focused on the issue of global warming.
So far, everyone has been having a great time; the movies are great, the people are friendly, and the food is good.
